For On Campus Students

Student Services Desk

The Student Services Desk is located in the lobby of the ELI building. They can help you with registering for programs, withdrawing from programs, and getting transcripts. Please remember to update your mailing address with the Student Services Desk before you leave the program.

Advising

The Academic Coordinator – Student and Program Support is located in room B204 in the administration area. They provide academic, social, and cultural support for students. The Coordinator is available to speak with you and can provide information and resources that support your academic success as well as your health and wellbeing.

Placement Tests

Before starting your program at ELI, you will be asked to complete the English language placement test. The test is done on UBC’s online platform, Canvas. The test will take approximately one hour to complete. You will be evaluated on grammar, vocabulary, writing and speaking skills. This test is used to place you in the correct class for your English level.

Once you have registered and paid for your programs, you will receive an email with instructions and directions on how to set up a Campus Wide Login (CWL) and get a student number. You will then be ready to start the placement test.

Once you have registered and paid for your programs, you will receive an email with instructions and directions on how to set up a Campus Wide Login (CWL) and get a student number.

Please remember to save your student number, CWL and password. You will need them again! The CWL is used to login to Canvas for all of your ELI programs.

Communication

Wireless Internet

UBC Wi-Fi is free and covers the whole campus. Students can use ubcsecure and/or ubcvisitor. Learn more about Internet on campus.

ELI Online

Student Study Centre

The ELI has a Student Study Centre in our building to offer you a quiet place to do your work. A small library is available, please make sure to sign books out. You can also access available computers there.

The Student Study Centre hours are:

  • Monday-Friday: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday: Closed

Please follow the rules of the Student Study Centre:

  • No food or drink allowed
  • Computers must be shut down 10-minutes before closing
  • In the Common (middle) area, you may use computers to read and send emails in languages other than English

UBC Card

The UBC Card is the card you will use for ID while you are studying at the ELI. Our Program team will inform you when and where you can pick up this card. It is important you have this card on you at all times.

UBC Library Card

If you are interested in getting a UBC Library Card, the cost is $40 (for 4 months). Please ask a staff member at the Student Services Desk for assistance.

Meditation / Prayer Space

UBC has meditation/prayer space that is available for all students.


For Online Students

Registration

The registration office can help you register for programs and withdraw from programs. You should ensure your email address and contact information is always up to date. You can reach the registration office at eli.registration@ubc.ca.

Internet Browsers

We recommend using Chrome, Firefox or Safari when logging in to Canvas. Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer are not compatible with Canvas.
